Creativity &
Wellbeing
The Benefits
Creativity engages multiple brain networks simultaneously, actively stimulating the prefrontal cortex (for emotional regulation and problem-solving) and the limbic system (for processing emotions).
This can support structural recovery and emotional wellbeing.
Spending time in nature, even for just 20 minutes a few times a week, instantly triggers physiological calming effects. It lowers stress hormones, reduces blood pressure, boosts the mood, and helps achieve clarity and focus.
DJing is a powerful stress reliever and can improve emotional regulation. Beat matching and hand eye co-ordination creates a deep flowstate where songs can be selected to express mood. Mixing tracks together successfully creates micro achievements that boosts mood and self efficacy.
Participants can bring music on a usb stick to mix on the DJ controllers. Guided by the philosophy 'EACH ONE TEACH ONE' / (peer to peer learning), basic DJ skills are learnt by using the DJ controller along with creating DJ and recording DJ mixes. Participants are encouraged to mix tracks together which engages problem solving skills and strengthens intuition. With music there is also movement which directly affects the somatic and autonomic system through sound, vibrations and rhythm. Heart rate muscle tension and breathing synchronise with the music which helps to shift physical and emotional states and bring in new energy.
Sewing
During workshops there's also opportunity to take part in sewing an item to keep, eg a bucket hat, a patch or a bag. Sewing has been shown to reduce the heart rate and cortisol. It triggers a slow dopamine release promoting bilateral brain integration which balances the left and right hemispheres helping to process stuck emotions and calm traumatic stress responses.
The workshops are suited to all ages and abilities accessible to people on low incomes and disadvantaged groups.
